Eastern Cape
PicturesDescriptionAccommodationsMap
One of the largest 'big five' private game reserves in South Africa's Eastern Cape, Kwandwe is owner-run with a strong focus on conservation. The 22,000 hectare/ 54,000 acre wilderness extends along 19 miles of privately owned Great Fish River frontage, featuring three luxurious lodges, a villa and unique safari activities.
Guests can participate in day and night game drives, walking safaris with experienced trackers and sleep-outs on specially designed platforms. Also available are specialized activities such as rhino darting, carnivore research and fixed-wing flights following the route taken by early Settlers. The Great Fish River was a hotly contested border during the Frontier Wars of 1779 to 1878 between the Xhosa nation, Dutch farmers and the 1820 Settlers from England. Kwandwe's reception building is a Frontier War-era fortified homestead, and the Reserve boasts its own intimate chapel.
Kwandwe features three intimate safari lodges and a private villa that offer world class sophistication and style. A member of the renowned Relais and Chateaux association, Kwandwe is located in a malaria-free area.
Most recent awards include 2010 Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Awards - runner up overall and 1st in the Small Hotels category for Kwandwe's health initiatives; 2008 Condé Nast Traveler Hot Hotels - Kwandwe Melton Manor was feature; 2007 Condé Nast Traveller - Kwandwe Private Game Reserve was listed 13th in Accommodation - Overseas Leisure Hotels for the Middle East, Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.
