Originally a fort built by the U.S. Army in 1838, during the Second Seminole War, Ft. Lauderdale has little left of its warlike past. Day 4 - Aruba
The charming Dutch island of Aruba has outdoor markets with excellent shopping, beautiful beaches, lush gardens and colorful architecture. Walk along Wilhelminastraat lined with Dutch colonial buildings that typify the early days of Aruba. Frenchmen's Pass is the site of a historic battlefield and where gold was discovered in 1824 and Aruba's first industry began. On the windward side of the island, see the curious Divi Divi Trees and the famous Natural Bridge sculptured by wind and sea. Experience the gardens of Casibari and the quaint village of Noord. Stop at St. Ann's Church to see the lovely oak altar hand carved in Holland.

Day 6 - San Blas Islands
The friendly Cuna Indians live quietly on these primitive islands off Panama's Caribbean coast. The arrival of visitors to their home is still a special occasion for these isolated island dwellers. They are happy to be photographed in their colorful attire, for perhaps a small tip. Bargain for one of their fancifully designed handmade embroideries called molas.
Day 7 - Panama Canal
Linking the Atlantic to the Pacific, the Panama Canal provides one of cruising's most unforgettable experiences. Over 10 years were needed to complete the canal's 51 miles in 1914 - so avoiding the lengthy and often dangerous voyage around Cape Horn. 'The Big Ditch' lifts vessels by a fascinating feat of mechanics aided by on-shore 'mule' locomotives through three great locks, traversing man-made lakes, channels blasted through rock, and the dense jungle. Two other special highlights of the canal are Gatun Lake and the Gaillard cut. Gatun Lake is one of the world's largest man-made lakes covering 163 square miles. Gaillard Cut is an 8 mile channel built through solid rock which was the most difficult excavation in the canal construction.

Day 9 - Puntarenas
The Central Pacific's largest city, Puntarenas sits on a long, narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Nicoya in Costa Rica. For years, it was the country's principal port, and though Puntarenas handles big cruise ships, a large fishing fleet still anchors in the estuary behind town. Being the country's most important fishing port, Puntarenas is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood. Though the water is murky, and the beach may seem a bit urban, it's a lively town on weekends, when people from San José fill its waterfront restaurants and bars. A series of open-air cafes that line the beach are the perfect place to head for dessert, or refreshments, since they specialize in ice cream and fresh fruit drinks.

Day 11 - Puerto Quetzal
Puerto Quetzal, on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, gives access to Guatemala City, the capital, beaches and some significant historical sites. Magnificent buildings of the colonial period remain at Antigua, the colonial capital, located near Guatemala City. Guatemala was the center of the old Mayan civilization, and many sites from the classic Mayan period (3rd-10th century AD) have been excavated and studied. The largest of these is Tikal in the northern lowlands, where some 3,000 structures, including tall temple pyramids as well as plazas and monuments, cover an area of about 6 sq miles. Thought to have sustained a population of 50,000 at its peak, it was abandoned for unknown reasons at the end of the 10th century.

Day 16 - Topolobampo
Topolobampo is the port for the city of Los Mochis. A large shrimping fleet is stationed here and the deep harbor is ideal for commercial fishing. Although these industries are significant, they pale by comparison to the region¡s most important attraction, the spectacular Copper Canyon. This scenic chasm is four times the size of the Grand Canyon, sculpted by the on-going process of erosion, 60 million years into its seemingly immortal lifespan. The Canyon's world-renown train ride covers the entire spectrum of terrain with 39 bridges and 87 tunnels, ending at an elevation of 8,000 feet above the sparkling Sea of Cortez.

Day 19 - Los Angeles
Much of Los Angeles lies in a fairly flat basin, surrounded by mountains and ocean. Although the Santa Monica Mountains, one of the most unheralded of the city’s remaining natural treasures, splits LA between the familiar sights of La-La Land to the south and the charmless suburbs to the north, the metropolis is easily traversed. Places for visitors to explore include Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, the central strip of Wilshire Boulevard with faded Art Deco "Miracle Mile" zone and good museums, and the beach towns of Santa Monica and Venice, where visitors can stroll along the former’s remodeled pier and Third Street Promenade outdoor mall, or visit the latter’s famed Muscle Beach and oceanside Boardwalk. Lengthier trips to LA may include the old-fashioned charm of Old Pasadena, home of ever-popular Rose Parade and Bowl, Downtown, site of much city heritage and setting for what skyscrapers the area does have, the South Bay, the place to find the region’s second biggest city of Long Beach, and Malibu, where visitors can try to get a glimpse of movie stars and assorted celebrities.

Day 25 - Oahu
Oahu is "The Gathering Place." It has more hotels, more restaurants, and more major attractions than all of the other islands put together. Our major city, Honolulu, is here. So is the "World's Best Beach" at Waikiki.
Honolulu is sophisticated, lively, and breathtaking. It has more in the way of arts, culture, and entertainment. It has an abundance of galleries, nightclubs, and museums, a major zoo, aquarium, Iolani Palace (the only royal palace on U.S. soil), Pearl Harbor, the Arizona Memorial... the list goes on and on.
The day-time high temperatures in Honolulu during the summer range from an average of 85 to 87 degrees F (29.4-30.6 C) with night-time lows of 70 to 74 (21.1-23.3 C). Winter day-time high temperatures in the city are 70 to 74 degrees F (21.1-23.3 C) and night-time lows are 65 to 69 degrees (18.3-20.6 C). Travelers may want to pack a light jacket and pants for strolling on the cooler winter evenings. Hikers planning to trek through some of Oahu's higher elevations should be aware that there is a 3.5 degree drop in temperature for every thousand foot rise above sea level. Its a good idea then to carry along a couple of layers of light clothing for these higher elevations, especially in the winter months.
No other American city could offer you the opportunity to surf the world's biggest waves, snorkel a lagoon, hike into a dormant volcano, golf at a dozen championship courses, and catch the sunset from a five-star restaurant. All within an hours drive of your hotel room.
The key to enjoying Oahu, as with most of the islands, is mobility. The Bus circles the island for only a dollar. Day 33 - Suva
Suva is the pulsing heart of the South Pacific and Fiji's main port. This waterfront district provides the hub for much of Suva’s activiy with high-rise office buildings, colonial buildings with second-story verandas, parks and government buildings. Many main points of interest are located on Victoria Parade and its extension, tree-shaded Queen Elizabeth Drive. Visit Thurston Gardens, Suva’s botanical park lush. The Fiji Museum reflects 3,000 years of Fijian history. Government House is on a hillside surrounded by landscaped grounds. The monthly Changing of the Guard is executed with almost as much pomp and ceremony as at London’s Buckingham Palace. Tholo-I-Suva Forest Park offers miles of trails through beautiful mahogany forest. There are waterfalls, natural swimming pools and thatched pavilions with tables. At picturesque Suva Cemetery you will find Fijian graves wrapped in colorful sulus and tapa cloth. The Pacific Harbor Resort on Coral Coast boasts an 18-hole championship course. Watersports include fishing, diving, and snorkeling.

Day 35 - Port Vila, Vanuatu
Port Vila is located around a magnificent natural harbour offering stunning views of Iririki and Ifira islands. It is Vanuatu's international gateway and remains the only town on the island. Vila is a pretty town. Clean and uncluttered, the waterfront area is so unpolluted, visitors are stunned to look down from the seawall and see live corals and tropical fish. It's also fast becoming known as the gourmet capital of the South Pacific. Though there is little night life in Vila except at the Resort Hotels, there is a nightclub (Flamingo), a friendly casino (at Le Meridien Resort), a movie theatre (French only) and some restaurants which often feature local or imported musicians. Best of all, Vila is a safe and hassle free environment. Stroll along the waterfront or darkened back streets late at night, and passing locals are likely to wish you a soft "Good night", or perhaps strike up a friendly conversation.
Day 36 - Noumea
Noumea, New Caledonia's capital, is a city of French culture often referred to as St-Tropez of the Pacific. Noumea is a pretty city with sidewalk cafes and little bistros resembling a French provincial town. Arriving in Noumea creates a feeling of being in a France while native Kanak people dress in colorful ankle-length dresses and fish the reef with spears for the evening’s meal. Not far off the coast, the longest barrier reef in the world shelters 350 species of coral and 1,500 species of fish. It looks its best from November through January when the Poincianas, or flame trees, turn red. Sights to see include Place des Cocotiers, St. Joseph's Cathedral, Aquarium, and Botanical Garden and Zoo.

Day 39 - Bay of Islands
Rich in legend and history, the Bay of Islands is New Zealand's cradle of European civilization, with many points of interest relating to early European and Maori settlement. There are many "firsts" associated with the Bay of Islands, such as the first European community, the oldest home and church in the country and the first capital of New Zealand, among others. Reserves have been established to protect what is left of the once vast native kauri forests with magnificent trees rivaling California's redwoods. Major sites in the Islands include historical Waitangi, Paihia, a subtropical marine resort popular as a starting point for bay cruises and fishing excursions, and Russell, one of the oldest towns in New Zealand known as the “Hell Hole of the Pacific”. Anglers still regard the Bay of Islands as a top fishing area, while residents cherish its unhurried pace, balmy climate and serenity. Other sights include Motukako Island, Kawhiti Caves, Maori Meeting House, and the Bay of Islands Maritime and Historic Park.

Auckland is regularly voted one of the best lifestyle cities in the world, with the cosmopolitan city centre complemented by great escapes within half an hour of downtown. Indulge in Auckland's shopping, nightlife and unrivalled cuisine and experience some of the many attractions and adventure activities on offer. There is never a shortage of things to do in the City of Sails. Sights to see include Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland Zoo, and Museum of Transport and Technology.

Day 42 - Picton
Picton, located at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, is the starting point into South Island. The surrounding area is renowned for its spectacular seascapes. Picton makes an ideal base for an exploration of the Marlborough Sounds. Today, large areas of the Sound are protected as the Marlborough Sounds Maritime Park. Cruising these waterways is the best way to get a close look at the many secluded bays and bush-clad headlands that make up the park. Excursions inland travel to the heart of a major wine growing region. Marlborough's wines have an international reputation for excellence and the vineyards around Blenheim offer some exclusive vintages that may be difficult to obtain elsewhere. Other sights include Picton Whaling Museum and the Edwin Fox Center.

Day 46 - Sydney
Sydney is the heart and state capital of New South Wales. A major world port, the city seems to stretch as far as can be seen to the west, north and south over 670 square miles. Where Sydney’s metropolis ends, the open bush of New South Wales begins. Sydney enjoys a superb sunny climate with a beautiful harbor crowned by billowing sails of the incomparable Opera House. Like many major cities, Sydney is a contrast of old and new with soaring glass and steel skyscrapers and the dramatic Opera House and interesting historical buildings. One of Sydney’s best viewing spots, the 48-story Australia Square Tower, is where the entire city can be seen in convenient orientation. Other sights include Cadman’s Cottage, the oldest surviving house in Australia; Royal Botanical Gardens, boasting a magnificent collection of South Pacific plant life; Art Gallery of New South Wales, a short walk from the center, the art gallery has an excellent permanent display of Australian, European, Japanese and tribal art. Harbor cruises and helicopter flightseeing are great ways to enjoy fine views of Sydney.

Where Sydney’s metropolis ends, the open bush of New South Wales begins. Sydney enjoys a superb sunny climate with a beautiful harbor crowned by billowing sails of the incomparable Opera House. Day 56 - Chuuk (Truk) Island
Chuuk is one of four island states which comprise the Federated States of Micronesia. Beneath the blue waters is a submerged museum of World War 2 wrecks, for there are more than 60 ships of the Japanese wartime fleet encrusted with corals lying at various depths. The lagoon has been declared a monument. Chuuk is one of two top scuba diving locations in the world. Weno has the best views of the lagoon and its sheltered waters. Chuuk's State Centre on Weno is where visitors can experience a taste of island life by visiting the local stores jammed with everything from kerosene stoves to ladies wear and handicraft. Climb into the old light house built during the Japanese occupation and visit the Blue Lagoon Resort for a stroll in the coconut palm grounds with splendid views across the water to Dublon Island formerly the Japanese Military Headquarters. Aside from visiting the pyramids near Cairo, Luxor and Al Karnak are places not to be missed when in search of ancient Egyptian monuments and artifacts. Luxor is on the southern part of ancient Thebes, Al Karnak on the north. Between the two, visitors can lose themselves for days in the hundreds of temples, chapels, tombs and gardens in the area. Too extensive to list all of them, a few of the tombs not to be missed are the tombs of Nefertari, Amenhotep II & III, several Ramesses and Tutankhamen.
Day 100 - Sharm El Sheikh
The land of the Sinai is the "great and terrible wilderness" of the Bible, across which the Israelites journeyed in search of the Promised Land. Sharm-el-Sheikh serves as starting point for an excursion into the desert and to St. Catherine’s Monastery, the oldest Christian monastery in the world. St. Catherine’s Mountain is at 7,926 feet the highest summit in Sinai, followed by Mount Sinai, where God is said to have given the Ten Commandments to Moses. The most popular pastime in Sharm-el-Sheikh as well as in Na'ama Bay is exploring the underwater marine life. The reefs are easily accessible; diving and snorkeling equipment can be rented at watersports centers and dive shops. Glass bottom boat cruises are also popular to see the colorful underwater world. The main shopping areas are at the resort area of Na'ama Bay, located five miles from the port. Egyptian cotton, Pharaonic souvenirs and gold cartouches are popular. There are plenty of eateries at Na'ama Bay, and the hotels offer a variety of restaurants with everything from seafood to international cuisine and fast food.
